Spot

4.8

Our Rating and Review

Spot pet insurance is a well-rounded pet insurance company with many types of pet insurance plans, including accident-only, accident and illness, and multiple wellness plans. Its accident-only plans start at an affordable $10 per month, while its complete coverage plans start at $16 per month. Typically, you can expect to pay $40 on average for dog insurance with Spot and $22 per month for cat insurance. Spot pet insurance also offers two tiers of wellness plans. Its gold plan is $9.95 per month and has an annual benefit of $250, while its platinum plan is $24.95 per month with a yearly benefit of $450.

Cover

Your pet will receive coverage for dental cleanings, wellness exams, vaccinations, fecal tests, deworming, and much more with a Spot wellness plan. Its accident plan will give you coverage for accident-related costs, such as treatments for broken bones, cuts, animal bites, and more. If you’re looking for complete coverage, its accident and illness plan gives you coverage for exam fees, prescription medications, behavioral issues, hereditary conditions, cancer treatments, diagnostic costs, and more. We love that Spot has comprehensive coverage for behavioral issues because many providers don’t offer this as a part of its coverage.

Spot will not cover pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures, breeding costs, prescription food, or exotic animals. Spot offers a generous 10% multi-pet discount for pet parents if you have multiple pets. We like that Spot also has a significant emphasis on education and provides pet parents with many free resources for behavioral issues and the importance of routine care. Overall, Spot is a great pet insurance option with many customization options, including unlimited annual benefits and multiple preventive care plans.

Pros & Cons

Pros Multiple wellness plan options Offers unlimited annual benefits No age restrictions for enrolling your pet 10% multi-pet discount Behavioral issues coverage available Cons Prescription pet food is not covered No coverage for exotic animals

ASPCA Pet Insurance

Most Experienced
5

Our Rating and Review

ASPCA pet insurance was founded in 2017 in collaboration with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. We like that it offers multiple types of plans, including accident-only coverage, accident and illness coverage, and wellness plans. It also provides a competitive and generous 10% multi-pet discount, which significantly benefits pet parents looking to insure several pets. Another bonus with ASPCA pet insurance is that it doesn’t require vet visits before enrollment, which many pet insurance providers require, so this can save pet parents time and hassle.

Cover

ASPCA pet insurance plans are comprehensive and provide coverage for accidents, illnesses, dental disease, hereditary conditions, behavioral issues, congenital conditions, and much more. We like that it offers dental and behavioral issue coverage. However, we want to note that its dental coverage is not as comprehensive as other providers that have dental coverage. Like all providers, ASPCA will not cover pre-existing conditions. It also won’t cover cosmetic procedures, breeding costs, and preventive care. You can expect to pay around $48.78 for dog insurance and $29.16 for cat insurance with ASPCA. If you want preventive care, you can choose between ASPCA’s two preventative care options. Its basic plan costs $9.95 per month and $24.95 per month for its prime plan. Its preventative care plans cover things like deworming, wellness checkups, vaccinations, dental cleanings, and more.

Overall, we like that ASPCA offers many customization options. However, we are disappointed that the maximum annual limit you can choose is $10,000, which is somewhat low and may not be worth it to some pet owners. We also like that the company offers microchipping coverage, a multi-pet discount, and is a partner of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Pros & Cons

Pros Offers multi-pet discount Partner of American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Microchipping coverage Curable pre-existing conditions can receive coverage Coverage for alternative therapies Cons Poor customer reviews Lower annual coverage limits

Embrace

Best for Discounts Offered
4.7

Our Rating and Review

Embrace pet insurance is an excellent option for pet parents looking for thorough coverage for their pets. Embrace offers customizable accident and illness plans, covering anything from cancer to prescription medications, dental illnesses, diagnostic testing, emergency care, and much more. Its plans will cost between $15 and $20 per month for cat and kitten insurance and $30 to $40 per month for dogs on average. Embrace also offers three options for wellness rewards, which can cost anywhere from $18.75 to $52.09 per month and can have a maximum allowance of $650 per policy year depending on the tier you choose. Its routine care plans will provide you with coverage for wellness exam fees, spay/neuter surgery, preventatives, fecal tests, vaccinations, titers, and more.

To learn more, read our Embrace Pet Insurance review

Cover

Embrace will not cover pre-existing conditions and has a strict pre-existing condition policy. However, it will cover curable conditions that are symptom-free for at least 12 months. It also won’t cover exotic animals or the costs of cosmetic procedures, pregnancy, or whelping. We like that Embrace has a unique Healthy Pet Deductible that can reduce your deductible by $50 each year that you don’t submit a claim. We also like that it offers an easy-to-use mobile app that makes submitting claims easier for pet parents. Embrace also has a high claim approval rate, which is another significant benefit for pet owners.

Overall, if you’re looking for extensive coverage, Embrace is a great choice. It covers many things, such as cancer, dental illnesses, and prescription medications that other pet insurance providers don’t cover. We don’t love that it can be more expensive than other providers, especially regarding its wellness plans. Still, the three wellness plan options have large allowances and insurance coverage, making the cost worthwhile to some pet parents.

Pros & Cons

Pros Offers unique Healthy Pet Deductible 30-day money-back guarantee Donates $2 to charity for every policy sold 10% multi-pet discount, 5% military discount Microchipping and spay/neuter coverage Cons A more expensive wellness plan Annual maximums

Healthy Paws

Best for Chronic Conditions
4.3

Our Rating and Review

Healthy Paws pet insurance is underwritten by the Chubb Group, an A+ rated insurer with over $25 billion in surplus, which can be reassuring for pet parents interested in this provider. We love Healthy Paws’ focus on charity. It runs both the “Every Quote Gives Hope” and “Refer-A-Friend” grant program, which has led to almost $1.6 million being donated to pet nonprofit organizations. We also like that Healthy Paws has an easy-to-use mobile app for claim submission and processing.

Cover

Healthy Paws has many customization options regarding its reimbursement percentage and deductible options. All of its plans have unlimited lifetime payouts, which is a significant advantage over other pet insurance providers. Its plans start at $25 per month for dogs and puppies but typically average around $40 per month. You can expect to pay about $20 per month for cats, with some plans starting at $12. Its pet insurance covers accidents and illnesses, such as hereditary conditions, cancer, diagnostic treatments, chronic conditions, emergency care, and more. We especially like that Healthy Paws does provide coverage for alternative therapies and prescription medications. Healthy Paws does not offer any type of wellness plan, so you’ll need to look elsewhere if you want routine care coverage. Like all providers, it won’t cover pre-existing conditions. Healthy Paws also doesn’t offer pet insurance for exotic animals.

Overall, we like that Healthy Paws offers a more affordable pet insurance plan with coverage for both accidents and illnesses. However, it lacks coverage options for wellness care and doesn’t offer an accident-only plan like other providers. If you’re looking for a charitable pet insurance provider with unlimited maximum payouts, you may want to consider this provider.

Pros & Cons

Pros Huge focus on charity Unlimited maximum payouts Underwriting by the A+ rated insurer, the Chubb Group Less expensive pet insurance option Has a user-friendly mobile app Cons 12-month waiting period for hip dysplasia No wellness plans

How Does Pet Insurance Work in Hawaii?

Pet insurance acts as a financial safety net for veterinary bills, especially for unexpected accidents or illnesses that your pet develops during its lifetime. It works by providing you with coverage for various conditions and circumstances. When your pet becomes ill or has an accident, simply take it to a licensed veterinarian or animal hospital. Keep the veterinary bill, then submit it to your pet insurance provider. Once it has processed the claim, you’ll be reimbursed based on your reimbursement rate for your policy.

Pet insurance can give you peace of mind that your pet will always have access to good veterinary care, even if it has a terrible accident or develops an illness. For many, pet insurance is an excellent investment that can save them hundreds, even thousands of dollars throughout their pet’s lifetime.

How to Choose the Best Pet Insurance in Hawaii for You

When shopping for pet insurance plans, it’s important that you consider many factors before choosing a provider. We recommend beginning by thinking about what kind of pet insurance plan you’d like for your pet. There are three main types of pet insurance plans to consider:

  • Accident-only coverage: As its name suggests, accident-only coverage only covers accident-related incidents, such as treatment for broken bones, animal bites, burns, and surgery for swallowing a foreign object. This type of plan will not cover illnesses or routine veterinary care. Accident-only coverage is usually the most inexpensive pet insurance plan and can be a great choice for a pet parent on a budget.
  • Accident and illness coverage: Accident and illness coverage will help with the costs of everything covered by accident-only coverage along with illnesses. For example, if your pet develops diabetes, cancer, hypothyroidism, or has an infection, accident and illness coverage can help with treatment and diagnosis costs. This plan will not help with the cost of routine veterinary care.
  • Wellness plans: Wellness plans, also known as preventative care plans, are typically add-ons to one of the other types of pet insurance plans. These types of plans will help with the cost of routine veterinary care, such as regular blood work, dental cleanings, wellness exams, and vaccinations.

After deciding what kind of plan you’d like to enroll your pet in, consider the following factors before choosing a pet insurance provider:

  • Does it have good customer reviews from online review websites and consumer report websites, like the Better Business Bureau?
  • What are the plans’ exclusions?
  • Does the plan have a lifetime or annual benefits cap?
  • Will this plan cover the costs of prescription diets and medications?
  • Can you communicate with your pet insurance provider through your preferred communication channel? (live chat, phone, email, etc.)?
  • Are dental illnesses or cleanings covered with this pet insurance plan?
  • Does this provider offer a preventative care plan?
  • What is this company’s claim approval rating?
  • Can you easily get a quote from this provider?
  • Does it offer a user-friendly mobile app?
  • Are alternative therapies or behavioral treatments available with this plan?

Don’t hesitate to sign up for a pet insurance plan. The longer you wait, the higher your risk is of your pet developing a pre-existing condition, which will not be covered with your plan. Take your time to choose a plan, then quickly enroll your pet so that you can rest easy knowing that it’s covered.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Insurance in Hawaii

What is Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance is health insurance for your pet that reimburses you for part of your pet’s vet bills based on your specific plan’s coverage. Unlike human insurance, pet insurance providers do not pay for your pet’s medical bill at the vet clinic or animal hospital. Instead, your pet insurance provider will reimburse you directly after you’ve submitted your claim. Most pet insurance plans will reimburse you for between 50 to 90% of the total vet bill. This means that you’ll pay out of pocket for your dog or cat’s medical bill at the time of the visit, then submit your claim to your pet insurance provider, which will then reimburse you for the cost up to your plan’s reimbursement rate.

Do pet insurance policies have waiting periods in Hawaii?

Yes, pet insurance policies more than always have waiting periods. between your initial enrollment period and when coverage officially begins for the plan. Across most providers, the standard is around 14 days for accidents and illnesses, but some others, like Embrace, can shorten your waiting period to as low as two days for accidents.

What does Pet Insurance typically cover?

Depending on what type of plan you choose, your pet insurance plan will cover different things. Accident-only plans provide medical coverage for accidental injuries, such as broken bones, sprains, and prescription medications. Accident-and-illness plans try to extend that coverage to include cancer treatments, digestive illness, hip dysplasia, and similar issues.
