Caring for our pets is our main responsibility as pet owners. We feed them, bathe them, and give them a warm place to sleep at night. However, vet bills can be devastating to family finances, especially from an unplanned accident or illness. Many pet families would love to provide healthcare to their ailing pets but have no feasible way to pay for these services. That’s where pet insurance comes into play.

Working in many similar ways to human healthcare plans, pet insurance will reimburse you a certain amount for many covered tests or treatments, making healthcare for your pet much more affordable.

Our Rating and Review

Topping our list is this Florida-based pet insurance provider. With offerings like no maximum age on pet coverage and covering pets as young as eight weeks old, you’ll have no trouble finding a plan to suit your needs. Like most other pet insurers, Spot gives you 30 days to ensure you are completely satisfied with your coverage.

To learn more, read our Spot Pet Insurance review.

Cover

Coverage is available for accidents-only, or you can bundle accident and illness coverage together. You can expect things like surgeries, hospitalizations, prescription meds, diagnostic imaging, cancer treatments, alternative therapy, and medical supplies to be covered at your predetermined rate of coverage which will range somewhere from 70-90%. If wellness benefits are needed, you have your choice between two preventative care riders to round out your coverage.

Cost

Spot only covers cats and dogs at this time, with the cost of coverage for dogs averaging about $40/month and cats at $22/month. This average cost is pricier than some of its competitors, but you also get a lot of coverage for the money. So, what’s not covered? This insurer does not cover pre-existing conditions, illnesses, or injuries caused by neglect, dental services, cosmetic care, and prescription food.

Pros & Cons

Pros No maximum age limit for coverage High levels of reimbursement Multi-pet discount available Cons Cosmetic procedures and breeding costs not covered Accident waiting period is longer than most providers

ASPCA Pet Insurance

Most Experienced
5

Our Rating and Review

ASPCA is next up on our list and stands out as a strong contender for many reasons. Not only does ASPCA have a short 14-day waiting period for all accidents, illnesses, and knee injuries, but it also lets you have 30 days to decide if the policy is right for you.

To learn more, read our ASPCA Pet Health Insurance review

Cover

ASPCA offers three levels of coverage: one that covers accidents only, one covering both illnesses and injuries, and one that covers advanced care. Microchipping is covered under the illness and advanced care plans. Average monthly costs run a little higher than other pet insurers, with dogs costing around $49/month and cats costing around $29/month. However, it offers low deductibles ranging from $100-$500 and a 70-90% reimbursement rate. Annual payouts are capped at only $10,000, though.

Cost

Not covered under ASPCA’s plans are cosmetic dentistry, dental cleanings, pre-existing conditions, breeding costs, and experimental treatments. It also doesn’t cover any animals other than cats and dogs. After reviewing all the data, we awarded ASPCA a rating of 4.6/5 due to the customizable plans it offers.

Pros & Cons

Pros 30-day money-back guarantee No exam required for enrollment Small waiting period for knee injuries Cons Does not offer direct deposits for claim disbursements Limited online options for filing claims

Embrace

Best for Discounts Offered
4.7

Our Rating and Review

Pet parents will love the extensive coverage Embrace offers as well as its charitable nature. Two dollars of every new policy that is purchased gets donated, which we think is pretty generous. Embrace has been around since 2003 and is best known for its Healthy Pet Deductible, which allows you to receive a $50 credit towards your deductible for any year you don’t submit an accident or illness claim.

To learn more, read our Embrace Pet Insurance review

Cover

Embrace only covers dogs and cats at this time. The average monthly cost for dogs is $35 and $18 for cats. You can find coverage for accidents, illnesses, diagnostic imaging, surgeries, hospitalizations, lab tests, and allergy testing. It doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, pregnancy costs, cosmetic procedures, fight-induced injuries, and DNA testing. However, Embrace will cover pre-existing conditions that have been cured and symptom-free for 12 months. One thing to keep in mind when signing up for Embrace is that if you ever change your plan, you will have to go through the certification process all over again. That means anything you have filed a claim for through Embrace is now considered a pre-existing condition and will not be covered.

Cost

Embrace does require a vet visit before coverage. This exam has to take place in the 12 months prior to enrolling. If your pet hasn’t been to the vet in this timeframe, you have to see a vet during the first 14 days of your coverage to get established.

Pros & Cons

Pros Some pre-existing conditions are covered with some stipulations Behavioral therapy is included in coverage Offers a good rate of reimbursement Cons Only covers pets under 14 years old If the type of coverage is changed, you have to recertify, resulting in new pre-existing conditions added to your pet’s file

Healthy Paws

Best for Chronic Conditions
4.3

Our Rating and Review

Healthy Paws is number four on our list. We think it’s the best provider for pets with chronic conditions as there are unlimited lifetime benefits. This means Healthy Paws will never stop reimbursing your costs even if you’ve used your benefits frequently. We have a soft spot in our hearts for this company as well as it donates an impressive 1.6 million dollars annually to needy pets, including rescue centers and shelters.

To learn more, read our Healthy Paws Pet Insurance review.

Cover

While it allows you 30 days to change your mind on your coverage, there is a 12-month waiting period for hip dysplasia which is a pretty long wait. Healthy Paws is unique in that it does not offer any type of wellness package and only has one basic healthcare plan available that covers costs associated with accidents and illnesses, including cancer care, diagnostic treatments, genetic conditions, and alternative care. However, things like pre-existing conditions, dental care, wellness care, examination fees, behavioral treatments, diet pet food, and boarding fees will not be covered.

Cost

It offers customization on your rates and coverage based on certain specifics of your pet, such as your pet’s age and breed. If your dog or cat is under five, this can be great news as you will have a high reimbursement rate and a low deductible. The older your pet gets, the higher your deductible will become and the lower your reimbursement percentage becomes.

Average prices range from under $40/month for dogs and $12/month for cats.

Pros & Cons

Pros Easy online portal to submit claims No cap on lifetime benefits Customizable rates may save you money Cons Only offers one plan with no add-on coverage available Older pets are more expensive to insure

Prudent Pet

Best for dog and cat parents who want basic options
4

Our Rating and Review

While Prudent Pet is pretty new to the pet insurance world,  it is underwritten by the Markel Insurance Company. This means you can trust that Prudent Pet knows a thing or two about how insurance should be handled. If that doesn’t inspire your trust, then maybe its A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau will.

To learn more, read our Prudent Pet Insurance review.

Cover

We like the 24/7 access to chat online with vets and its 30-day money-back guarantee. Average coverage runs about $39/month for dogs and $23/month for cats. Prudent Pet offers three levels of coverage ranging from accident-only coverage to accident and illness coverage, and its ultimate coverage. The ultimate plan offers unlimited annual caps and covers things many insurers don’t cover, like mortality benefits and vacation cancellation. Its wellness coverage is set up the same way by offering three different tiers of benefits. The least expensive option is pretty limited on what it covers, but you can expect coverage (and price) to increase as you move to the upper tiers.

Cost

There is not a lot Prudent Pet doesn’t cover, but pre-existing conditions, things like toenail clipping or claw removal, and grooming fees are not included. Overall, Prudent Pet is a solid choice for coverage.

Pros & Cons

Pros Many options for coverage Discounts available for insuring multiple pets Easy to navigate online portal Cons Doesn’t cover much in the way of alternative therapies Costly premiums

How Does Pet Insurance Work in Arizona?

So you’ve purchased pet insurance, and your pet is sick. It’s time to go to the vet, but how does pet insurance work exactly? For starters, you are free to choose any licensed vet you want. You don’t have to worry about certain vets being in network with pet insurance as you are reimbursed directly, not the vet. Once your pet has been seen, hang on to the receipt. You will need this to submit your claim.

Some companies only need an uploaded photo of your receipt, while others require you to print off and fill out a claim form. After submitting your claim, your insurance company will review everything to make sure your claim is covered under your plan and determine how much money you will receive back. You may receive a check in the mail or have the money placed directly in your bank account.

How to Choose the Best Pet Insurance in Arizona for You

Several factors need to be considered when deciding which insurance is best for you. There are many great options on the list we’ve provided, but only you know which plan is best for your pet. Let’s look at the most important parts of deciding what works best for you.

Budget

First and foremost, it doesn’t matter how great the coverage is if you can’t afford it. We suggest sitting down and deciding how much money you feel comfortable putting towards pet insurance each month, then finding the best coverage you can for that price.

Special Considerations for Your Pet

When finding coverage for your pet, you need to consider your pet’s age, gender, and breed. Older pets will have more medical issues and, therefore, will cost more money than younger pets. Certain breeds are prone to genetic conditions like hip dysplasia, so you want to make sure whatever the condition is will be covered.

How Often Do You Visit the Vet?

Does it seem like you are constantly running to the vet with your pet, or are you lucky enough to only go once a year for vaccinations? Depending on how frequently you visit your local vet’s office may determine what extent of coverage you want.

Ease of Submitting Claims

Is a mobile app an important feature for you, or are you more of a pen and paper type of person? Not all claims submissions are created equal so make sure whatever company you go with has a process you are comfortable with.

Turnaround Time

Not only is how to submit claims important, but also how long the claims take to be reviewed and the money then delivered to your hands. If budget is a big consideration, you may need to look at how quickly you will be reimbursed for your out-of-pocket costs.

How Much is Pet Insurance in Arizona?

Sometimes it’s hard to wade through all the fine print to see how much you will be paying as well as what companies offer the most bang for your buck. We’ve got a side-by-side comparison for you to look at to compare average prices across the board. Keep in mind that several factors will play a role in how much you end up paying other than your monthly premium. Things like your yearly deductible, the percent you will be compensated, and the yearly benefit allowance affect how much you will spend annually. Your monthly premium itself will be determined by which coverage plan you’ve selected, any add-on benefits, and the age of your pet.

Information for Pet Owners in Arizona

Several things probably spring to mind when you picture the Grand Canyon State. Arizona is a breath of fresh air for both you and your pets with its lush forests, majestic mountain ranges, and awe-inspiring canyons.

Below, we’ll touch on what pet laws Arizona has in place that you need to know and some fun pet-friendly activities for the whole family. Arizona also has some great pet resources available if you ever need a helping hand!

Arizona Pet Laws

Any dog three months or older has to be licensed if it lives in the state of Arizona for 30 consecutive days a year. Once licensed, your dog must wear a tag with the expiration date and number of its license on its collar at all times. Before a license is given, though, you must provide documentation of your pet’s rabies vaccination.

You must have your dog on a leash in public places. In addition, your pet must be kept on a leash at all times if it’s a vicious breed or a female in heat. These laws are in place to help the citizens of Arizona feel safe when they are out and about.

Fun Things To Do with Your Pet in Arizona

Having your pet by your side makes everything more fun. Living in Arizona gives you many unique opportunities to enjoy life with your pet. Dine at one of its many pet-friendly restaurants or enjoy a day of camping and relaxing by a campfire at one of its state parks.

Sedona Red Rock Adventures offers only dog-friendly tours that range from touring ancient Indian ruins, strolling through local wineries, or exploring the Grand Canyon. Other pet-friendly attractions include Goldfield Ghost Town, Pima Air and Space Museum, and Peddler’s Pass Flea Market. Really, though, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Arizona is especially pet-friendly, and you will have endless options available to you.

Arizona Pet Resources

  • Arizona Pet Project: This small company works hard to provide services and resources to vulnerable community members ensuring they never have to give up their pets when times get hard.
  • Humane Society of Southern Arizona: Whether it’s by providing assistance through boarding, spaying or neutering, or providing food for your pet, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona can help you get the care and services you need.
  • Arizona Small Dog Rescue: This company rescues dogs in need and keeps them until their forever home can be found. It also provides assistance to pet owners who have lost their pets.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Insurance in Arizona

Is buying pet insurance worth it?

For most pet owners, pet insurance is absolutely worth it. We never know when our pet could have an unexpected accident or develop an illness, so having a backup plan in place to help pay for your pet’s vet bills is beneficial for most pet parents. Vet bills can quickly add up to hundreds, or even thousands of dollars, which many pet parents don’t have readily available.

Having pet insurance protects you financially and gives you peace of mind that you won’t have to say no to recommended treatments to benefit your pet’s health and happiness.

Do all vets take pet insurance in Arizona?

In short, yes. Your pet insurance provider doesn’t work with your vet, so you don’t have to worry about your vet being in-network like a human health insurance plan. Instead, you submit your claim directly to your pet insurance provider, which will reimburse you based on your coverage. This allows you to go to any licensed veterinarian, whether they are at a clinic or animal hospital, to get your pet the care they need. As long as the treatment is covered under your plan, you’ll be covered.

Does pet insurance only cover dogs and cats?

Most pet insurance providers only cover dogs and cats. To date, the only pet insurance provider that covers birds and exotic pets in the United States is Nationwide Insurance. Nationwide can cover your pet pig, lizard, parrot, chinchilla, and other exotic animals. Exotic pets need excellent veterinary care just as much as dogs and cats, so consider looking into a pet insurance plan for them today if you have an exotic pet.

Our Methodology

Here at Quartz, our research team looks to examine all pet insurance policies and comes up with reviews based on:
  • Coverage
  • Plan options
  • Cost
  • Reputation
  • Customer service
  • Species available
  • Wellness benefits
We’ve created a 5-star rating system to score pet insurance brands based on a 100-point scale. To develop a list of the best pet insurance plans, we looked into plans, rating coverage, claims handling, reimbursements, deductibles, and limitations.  Each factor is weighted differently based on the following factors:
  • Monthly Pricing (25 points): How each pet insurance company charges for their plans is a crucial part of the decision-making process of the customer. Affordable rates and comprehensive coverage are the defining characteristics of providing the best pet insurance.
  • Coverage (20 points): We scored companies based on the treatments and procedures they cover. Providers offering broader coverage and more unique treatments received more points.  Pet insurance policies are not offered by all companies for older pets. Providers who have an age limit on the pets they cover were deducted points.
  • Plans (15 points): Pet insurance providers offer accident-and-illness plans, accident-only plans, wellness add-ons, and pet preventive care add-ons, so customers can choose the right plan for their pets. We also factored in costs to achieve the most comprehensible review for your pet’s needs.
  • Customization Options (10 points): You can ensure your pet only gets what they need by customizing your policy. A higher score was earned by providers who offered a greater range of annual limits, deductibles, and reimbursement rates.
  • Customer Service (10 points): We scored companies based on their website accessibility and usability, mobile apps, and grating points to companies with the most customer experience options.
  • Industry Reputation (10 points): We assessed each company’s industry reputation by reviewing up-to-date BBB ratings and accreditation information, as well as their years of experience in the industry.
  • Waiting Periods (10 points): Companies with shorter accident and illness waiting periods scored higher than companies with longer waiting periods.
Our team revisits each company’s information at the end of every month to make updates and ensure the information is as accurate as possible.
