Are Banks Open Today?

See the full list of federal holidays when banks are typically closed.

Updated: Dec 13, 2023

Over the holidays it can be confusing to know when certain businesses and government offices are closed. The Federal Reserve System is the central banking system in the United States, and it recognizes 11 federal holidays each year.  Most bank and credit union branches are closed on these days, but ATMs are still accessible. You can also log in to your bank’s online platform or mobile app to check your statement, pay bills, transfer money, or make a mobile deposit – though posted fund transfers and deposits might be delayed until the next business day. If you need to visit a bank in person to obtain a cashier’s check, apply for a loan, or make a large cash deposit, it’s good to know when the banks are closed. Key Points:

  • Christmas Day is the next federal holiday in the U.S., followed by New Year’s Day
  • Some branches may be closed or have adjusted operating hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve
  • It’s best to check the holiday schedule posted on your bank’s website, as branch closures vary across financial institutions and states.

Banking Holiday Schedules

The tables below outline bank holiday schedules for 2024 and 2025. Some states and financial institutions may have different schedules. For example, TD Bank branches stay open on Washington’s Birthday and Columbus Day, and some states observe additional holidays, like the day after Thanksgiving.

If a holiday takes place on a weekend, banks may be closed on an adjacent business day. The general rule of thumb is that if the holiday falls on a Saturday, most banks will be open the preceding Friday. But if the holiday is on a Sunday, banks will be closed the following Monday.
