After a Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep®, or Ram owner’s factory plan expires, they can get a Mopar® extended warranty to cover repairs. But is a Mopar plan like Maximum Care℠ or Added Care Plus worth it? In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about the Mopar extended warranty, including what it covers and how much it costs. We’ve reviewed the best extended car warranties and will show how Mopar compares to your other options, as well.

An extended car warranty refers to mechanical breakdown coverage offered by a vehicle manufacturer. However, this term is often mistakenly used to describe coverage from third-party companies. Independent providers offer similar protection through vehicle service contracts, but we’ve used the terms interchangeably in this article for convenience.

Mopar Extended Warranty Coverage

Mopar offers multiple factory-backed extended warranty plans through its Vehicle Protection program: Maximum Care, Added Care Plus, and two Powertrain Care plans. These plans apply to Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles. Mopar vehicle protection plans cover genuine Mopar parts and factory-trained technicians. They also include extra benefits like roadside assistance.

Mopar is the parts manufacturer for Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA US LLC). FCA merged with the PSA Group in 2021 and the new corporate group is called Stellantis. Other brands in the family include Fiat® and Alfa Romeo.

Be aware that the plans you find from your dealer might vary. Mopar’s most popular plans are the Maximum Care and Added Care Plus plans. Some dealerships (like Chrysler) may have other options beyond what you can find on Mopar’s main website, like Powertrain Care℠ or Powertrain Care Plus℠. You also might find other term options like unlimited miles.

Mopar Maximum Care

Parts covered: 5,000+
Purchase window: Before 3 years/36,000 miles
Maximum term: 8 years/125,000 miles

The Maximum Care plan is Mopar’s highest level of coverage. It’s an exclusionary plan, so it covers any mechanical breakdown except for the parts listed in the contract (the exclusions). The service contract is designed to cover repair costs due to defects in materials or workmanship, not normal wear and tear or cosmetic deterioration. Maximum Care offers comprehensive coverage, which is similar to a new vehicle bumper-to-bumper plan.

Mopar Added Care Plus

Parts covered: 850+
Purchase window: Before 3 years/36,000 miles
Maximum term: 8 years/150,000 miles

This is a mid-level plan that covers many major systems. It includes the:

  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Drive axle
  • Air conditioning
  • Electrical
  • Cooling
  • Fuel system

Mopar Powertrain Care Plans

Parts covered: 300+ to 400+
Purchase window: Before 3 years/36,000 miles
Maximum term: 8 years/125,000 miles

As mentioned, Maximum Care and Added Care Plus are the VSCs primarily advertised by Mopar. However, you may find Powertrain Care plans through certain dealerships–especially Chrysler.

For dealerships that do offer these plans, drivers can expect extended coverage for the most crucial parts of the car, plus a few more systems. Powertrain plans are more budget-friendly options that take care of the car systems that are often the most expensive to fix. Keep in mind that Mopar’s regular Powertrain Care plan only goes up to 300+ components, while the Powertrain Care Plus plan goes up to 400+.

Mopar Extended Warranty Benefits

All Mopar warranty plans come with the following benefits:

  • First-day rental: This covers $35 for a rental car when you visit the dealer for any repair or maintenance service (not bodywork, though).
  • Car rental allowance: In the case of a breakdown, this covers rental reimbursement of $35 per day up to $175.
  • Roadside assistance: This covers $100 per occurrence for tows, flat tire changes, lockout assistance, fuel deliveries, and battery jump-starts.
  • Trip interruption protection: If your car breaks down over 100 miles from home, this covers a reimbursement up to $1,000 for food and lodging.

Maximum Care and Added Care Plus also come with key fob replacement. This covers up to three key fob repairs or replacements with a maximum benefit of $600. In comparison, most other extended warranties don’t offer key fob benefits.

What Does Mopar Maximum Care Not Cover?

Maximum Care is the highest plan from Mopar, but it still doesn’t cover everything. No extended warranty does. Below are a few exclusions standard to extended warranty plans:

  • Damage from misuse or lack of maintenance
  • Accident or environmental damage
  • Aftermarket modifications
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Wearable items like brake pads and filters
  • Regular maintenance services
  • Cars with modified or tampered odometers
  • Damage to covered components by non-covered components

How Does The Mopar Extended Warranty Work?

If you have a breakdown, the first thing to do after getting to safety is to get your vehicle to a local dealer. You can use roadside assistance from the plan if you need towing.

The service department will diagnose the issue and then determine if the warranty covers the repair. The warranty may offer partial coverage or no coverage depending on the situation and plan.

If the warranty covers the repair, you’ll just pay your deductible to the dealership. Deductible options include $0, $100, or $200.

Can You Use A Mopar Extended Warranty Anywhere?

You can use a Mopar extended warranty at any FCA-brand dealership. This includes Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram locations. Except in special circumstances, the warranty will not cover repairs from other dealerships or facilities.

Mopar Extended Warranty Cost

On average, Mopar extended warranties cost between $2,000 and $4,000 depending on your car and the warranty terms you select. Mopar Factory Warranty

If your car is under 3 years/36,000 miles, you still have time to decide whether to get a Mopar warranty. Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram vehicles all have the same factory warranty:

Mopar Aftermarket Warranty Options

Mopar isn’t your only extended warranty option if you have a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram. Third-party extended warranty companies like Carchex and Endurance offer plans that are comparable to Mopar’s warranty. You also might find these companies offer more flexibility.

For example, reputable third-party warranty companies allow you to visit any licensed repair shop (including dealerships) for coverage. On the other hand, Mopar requires you to visit a Stellantis-brand dealership for repairs.

Also, you only have until 3 years/36,000 miles, whichever comes first, to buy a Mopar extended warranty. Third-party providers allow you to purchase coverage at any time, on the other hand. As long as your car is under the maximum mileage limit, you can find a plan. Aftermarket warranty companies can also cover up to 200,000 or even 300,000 miles in some cases, far beyond Mopar’s 150,000-mile limit.

Mopar Extended Warranty: Our Take

At the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide what the best option is for an extended warranty. When you begin shopping around, we recommend comparing at least a couple of Mopar warranty quotes from different dealers along with some third-party plans.
